23. Design Manager – Being a Design Manager is more difficult than it may appear at first glance. According to the FAA, a college degree is not required to be considered for this position. You only need to be a U.S. citizen under 31 years of age. From those without a degree, they require a minimum of three years’ work experience in progressively responsible positions. When we think of the ultimate dream salaries in the United States today, automatically we think of Business Executives, Doctors, Lawyers and Entrepreneurs. And we’re right on the money, as it were. Medical careers, like surgery or anesthesiology are historically the highest paid, along with corporate executive jobs and Law. Some of the sciences, like engineering and computers, also pay pretty well. But while it’s true that these careers do have the highest salaries, they also come with many grueling years of training (and tuition payments.)

For the sake of this article, we will exclude executive positions. CEO and other executive salaries are often reflective of years of experience in the business world and can also be influenced by other factors like incentives, bonuses, and government regulations.

Becoming any kind of a doctor will consume at least 10 years of your life through university, med school and residency, the latter two being no walk in the park. The specialties with the best salaries (anesthesiology, obstetrics, internists and surgeons) carry great responsibility in their well trained hands every day, caring for patients undergoing risky procedures and delivering new lives into the world. It makes you think twice before complaining about high paid doctors and medical bills when you consider the cost of human life. Highest Paying Jobs Without an MD

After the initial top ten, the wages drop significantly (though they are still not too shabby). Here are the median annual salaries for the highest paying jobs outside the medical field (jobs that do not require an MD):

As you can deduce from the job titles, these all require a high level of specific skills and training as well. In addition, most of these jobs are managerial positions, which probably indicate several years of experience on the job too. Lawyers have quite a bit of school and training under the belts, not to mention extensive and nerve wracking exams. Anyone working with computer systems will have an advantage in the job market; it’s not a skill possessed by many. Infrastructure jobs, such as engineering and architecture aren’t likely to disappear anytime soon, and have the added feature of huge growth opportunities in contract work.

FIVE JOBS WHERE DIVORCE IS MOST LIKELY AND PROBABLE REASONS:

Being such a combination of factors, it is indeed difficult to predict if pursuing a certain career would be prejudicial to the longevity of a marriage. However, a recent study “A Comparison of Law Enforcement Divorce Rates with Those of Other Occupations” (2009) published in the “Journal of Police and Criminal Psychology” in the U.S.A. claims that the rate of divorce is unusually high in case of certain professions. Among them, the following are the top five:

1. Dancers and Choreographers ( 43.05%)
2. Bartenders (38.43%)
3. Massage Therapists (38.22%)
4. Gaming Cage workers at Casinos (34.66%)
5. Extruding Machine Operators (32.74%)

The rate of divorce among dancers and choreographers is a staggering 43.05%. The working conditions for these professionals are very competitive and strenuous involving long practice hours. It is possible that this stress and strain seeps into their relationships, resulting in a high rate of divorce among them.

This is followed by bartenders. Apparently it is natural, given that they work in an extrovert environment and have a greater chance of meeting people and developing a relationship than in case of other professions. According to some divorce attorneys, in general people in hospitality industry who work irregular hours are more vulnerable to temptation on the job in the form of co-workers as well as patrons. They work in a noisy, hectic and somewhat reckless environment; shifts are irregular and usually they have to work through weekends and holidays also.

Further, they have to be very tactful in dealing with unruly or rude patrons. Similar factors come into play in case of gaming cage workers or cage cashiers (4^th in the list), who count the money at casinos and other gaming establishments. Stress is high for them also because they are always under observation of supervisory and surveillance personnel.

In the third place are massage therapists. Depending on where they work, massage therapists can have quite a high-profile job. The physical and intimate nature of their job, long work hours, the stress of being patient around unreasonable patients, etc put massage therapists at a high risk of divorce.

The fifth place is taken by Extruding machine Operators. It is however surprising as this job does not involve a lot of stress and is quite different in nature from the other four.

Conclusion

The  above is not the complete list. Telephone operators (29.3%), Nurses and psychiatric and home health-aides (28.95%), entertainers, performers and people working in sports (28.49%) come further down the line. The general trend is thus a higher rate of divorce among helping professionals and those working in the hospitality industry.

However instead of being prejudiced towards a particular job industry, these statistics can be used to recognize the actual reasons which make professionals in these jobs more prone to divorce, and accordingly inform marital therapists, relationship counselors, family court judges etc so that they are better equipped in stemming increasing incidents of divorce.

Those who wish to work in the field of astronomy and astrophysics will need a Physics degree.  This line of work deals with understanding celestrial objects such as planets, galaxies solar systems, and stars.  Those who earn bachelors degrees in Astronomy and Astrophysics go on to get their graduate degrees in the field to further their careers.

3. Academic Administration (Educational Administration and Supervision)—0 percent, median earning at $65,000

Those who work in this field are administrators of schools and school systems (K-12).  Jobs in this field include such supervisory roles as Principals, HR director, and IT director or support roles such as audit and IT support.  Those in this field sometimes have Master degrees and will need to have some work experience before taking on a leadership role.

There is a vast need for teachers and schools are increasing monetary incentives for those that want to go into this profession.  There are a lot of complaints about the long hours and the low pay—but you can’t beat having three months off out of the year.

8. Agricultural Economics—1.3 percent, median earning at $57,000

Those in this field apply the vast theories of economics to the study crop and livestock.  It uses economic principles of international trade, labor markets, and capital allocation (among many other principles) to study agriculture.  This field of study is also known as agronomics.

9. Medical Technologies Technicians—1.4 percent, $58,000

Those who are in this specific field are called medical technologists and are in charge of operating medical technology in labs and medical centers.  Medical technologists uses their medical tools to analyze blood, dna, bacteria, among a plethora of other  biological specimens.  They are also sometimes referred to medical laboratory scientists.  If you’ve seen CSI or any of the other police procedural tv shows, then you’ve seen a medical technologist at work—albeit their real jobs aren’t as dramatic.
